Wellcome: Hub Evaluation

Wellcome supports scientific research to solve the urgent health challenges around mental health, global heating and infectious diseases. The Wellcome Hub was set up in 2014 to pursue this objective in a new way - by offering a sizable grant and workspace to facilitate transdisciplinary teams. Wellcome wanted to review how the initiative is performing and to establish a consistent evaluation framework as well as to identify opportunities for improvement. The beneficiaries of the Hub are varied, and so the evaluation needed several different lenses to provide a complete picture.

The Brief

What we did

Liminal were independently appointed to conduct an evaluation which was based on a survey amongst past and present residents, previous and current applicants, which were supported with in-depth interviews. We learned that The Hub has demonstrated that it can adapt to allow different residencies to pursue their own specific needs and objectives in a way that is right for them and undertake projects that would not be possible elsewhere. When the residents have encountered challenges there has been a genuine desire to change the way things are done - and this has benefitted Wellcome, and modelled new ways of working. By working with Liminal, Wellcome is learned how to develop and scale this way of collaborative working to solve new health challenges in future.

This evaluation has really helped Wellcome to understand the effectiveness of the Hub model, and to think about how to develop this way of collaborative working to address new health challenges in future.
